The Wedding of Emily & Mike, The BarnYard, May 2023, Louisa Dettmer Wedding Photography

We were honoured to photograph the lovely wedding of Emily and Mike at The BarnYard, one of our all-time favorite venues. The venue is simply breathtaking and offers so many options to make your special day even more personal. The team at The BarnYard is simply amazing and a joy to work with. What’s more, it’s conveniently located just around the corner from us, so we always enjoy supporting our most local venue.

The wedding ceremony was held outdoors on a stunning sunny day, and Emily, Mike, their friends, and family were a delight to spend time with. We had such fun with them throughout the entire day, as is evident in the photographs. It was a pleasure to be part of such a joyful event and we have no doubt that Emily and Mike will enjoy countless happy years together as Mr. and Mrs.

The venue
How did you choose your venue?

We wanted to keep it local to us. Being a 5 minute drive from us it was perfect.

Why was it the perfect venue for your Kentish ceremony?

The outdoor aspect, it was local and just a beautiful setting.

The outfits
Tell us about your wedding dress/outfit – where did you buy it, and how did you know it was ‘the one’?

I investigated prices of dresses at different shops. I decided to look at the cheapest first which was at Wed2Be in Ashford. Surprisingly it was the first dress I tried on. I tried others on, but I went back to it and I was just so emotional I just knew it was the one.

Did you have any special accessories or shoes to complete your look?

We didn’t have a traditional wedding I just wanted to keep the look classic. I did use similar little details that my mum had for her wedding.

How did you choose the suits?

This was probably the hardest part of shopping. Went to every suit shop just to stay with going to Next which was the first shop we looked at. We got the shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt and ties and pocket squares from suits direct.

Tell us about your bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits.

The Groomsmen had the same suit as the Groom. The Bridesmaids, I just tried to keep it to the colours of the flowers and similar details to my wedding dress. The adult Bridesmaids’ dresses were from Next and the children Bridesmaids dresses from Shein.

Hair & makeup
Who did you use for your hair and/or makeup for your wedding?

Makeup by Emma Jane. Emma did our makeup and Shannon did our hair.

How did you decide on the style and look you wanted for the big day?

I watched a lot of Instagram videos and did a lot of Googling. But kept it classy and simple. I made the bridesmaid flowers first and worked around them.

The ceremony
What was your favourite moment of the ceremony?
Bride: For me it was getting ready with my girls in The Barnyard dressing room and seeing Mike as I was walking down the aisle.

Groom: Seeing Emily walk down the aisle.

Did you pick any special music to walk down the aisle to, or have any readings?

Yes, we support Manchester United and their walk out song really fit in well for when I walked down the aisle.

The reception

What food did you have, and how was it?

We used The Barnyard’s in house caterers and had the BBQ.  It was lovely – we wanted to keep food simple and this worked well for us.

Tell us about your wedding cake. Who made and designed it for you?

I would say with something special like your wedding cake find the time to look around. If you find someone you want, stick with them, and try not to change your mind, because the design I wanted I didn’t get with our cake. I did have my topper, which I loved.  I had a one tier cake and over 100 cup cakes which makes things so much easier so people can help themselves and easier to take home.

The decor

What was your decor/colour scheme, and how did you decide on it?

The Barnard is such a beautiful setting that we kept it simple and followed the style used in the Bridesmaid flowers that I made.

Who did your wedding flowers?

I did the Bridesmaid flowers, bouquet and boutonnieres myself. Your Beautiful Day did the venue flowers.

What did you have in your flower arrangements/bouquets?

They were all Faux Flowers and they looked absolutely stunning. I just had different pinks, whites, and greenery. My bouquet was white and green.

How did you add personal touches to the look and feel of your day?

I tried to do a lot myself. I made the welcome sign, table planner, place names, favours even supplied the sweets for the children on the tables and the sweetie cart. We added a bit of a football theme to include my fiancé.

The entertainment

Did you have a DJ or a band? How did you choose them?

Yes, we had a DJ and choose them as they are highly recommended by The Barnyard and so glad we went with them.

What was your first dance, and why was it special to you?

You are the reason (duet version) by Callum Scott and Leona Lewis. We have been through a lot, and it really fitted in to how far we have come as a family.

The photography

Who was your wedding photographer, and how did you choose them?

Louisa Dettmer Wedding Photography. We wanted someone local and we knew of Louisa’s work as our children go to the same school. I had also visited an open day at our venue and Louisa and Duncan were there. It felt so right going with Louisa. It was meant to be.

What style/look did you want for your photos?

I thought I wanted a rustic feel when I got engaged but I wanted classy and again keeping it simple.

Do you have a favourite photo from the day?

Yes, I do but I’ve got to say they are all my favourite I know when we choose photos for our album it’s going to be very difficult.

Did you have a videographer?

Yes, we did. It was his first wedding and Iv watched it so many times and to this day I still get emotional when I watch it. It’s turned out perfect and glad we gave him the opportunity to work with us.

And finally

What was your absolute highlight of the day?

Both our absolute favourite part is still walking down the aisle seeing each other and having our favourite people in one place.

Do you have any tips or advice for other couples having a Kentish Ceremony?

Enjoy everything about your day it really does go so fast. Stay local using local people. Watch their work on social media, make the appointments, go to the open days, try their products before making a decision. Try not to over think everything. It really does work out perfect in the end.
