Winters Barns

“Winters Barns is a beautiful barn dating from 1660 with vaulted beamed ceilings and stunning grounds. It is located just outside the historical city of Canterbury in the heart of Kent. It is the perfect romantic setting for anyone seeking exclusive use of a secluded venue.”

We had all waited for Candy and Chris’ big day at Winters Barns for such a long time after the covid disruption, but it really was such a beautiful one!
On our arrival, makeup by Liss and hair by Kerrie were underway and the girls were looking stunning.  The boys arrived as planned and headed to the Groom Room at Winters Barns to change into their suits.  Its such a convenience that both Bride and Groom are able to get ready at the venue and one of the many great things about Winters Barns, along with a fabulous team who look after you on the day.

The weather was changeable to say the least and the outdoor ceremony needed to be moved indoors at relatively short notice, which was no problem for the Team and meant that Candy and Chris instead said their vows in the beautiful barn.  Thankfully, straight after the Ceremony the sun came out and we were able to enjoy the gorgeous landscaped gardens to the max!

It was a joy to spend time mingling with Candy and Chris, their two kids and their friends and family who ensured the couple were surrounded by love and laughter for the whole day.  The couple were such good fun and it shows in their photographs.  With all the postponements, Candy and I had lots of chats since their original booking so I knew we were in for a fab day!  One of my highlights was the Mr & Mrs quiz just before their first dance, soooo funny!!

The dancefloor was immediately packed and we left the couple dancing the night away in various hats, masks and twirling around funny props – what a start to married life!

Candy and Chris, we wish you all the best and are so grateful to have been able to share the day with you xx

The venue

How did you choose your venue?

We had been to visit Winters Barns twice before we booked, we both really liked the outdoor ceremony area and having separate indoor areas for dining and dancing

Did you see many venues before deciding?

Yes, we saw 5 or 6 venues and had looked online at quite a few as well.

Why was it the perfect venue for your Kentish ceremony?

For us it just ticked everything on our wish list for our venue there was nothing we could fault with it.

The outfits

Tell us about your wedding dress/outfit – where did you buy it, and how did you know it was ‘the one’?

I got my wedding dress from Isabella Grace, I went in with a open mind wanting to try each style on and this one was the one I felt most like myself and comfortable in.

Did you have any special accessories or shoes to complete your look?

I had some jewellery bought for me, my partner got me a beautiful necklace which funnily enough matched the bracelet and earrings my parents got for me.

How did you choose the suits?

The suits were from Moss Bros and we chose them because they cater for all shapes and sizes

Tell us about your bridesmaid and groomsmen outfits.

The groomsmen all had the same suits as the groom and the bridesmaids had dresses from La Closet De Chanel which were multiway dresses.

Hair & makeup

Who did you use for your hair and/or makeup for your wedding?

My makeup was by a lovely lady called Liss Lacáo who was sooooooo nice. My hair was by one of my good friends Kerrie – Bridal Hair By Kerrie it was always going to be her to do my hair as soon as she started out.

How did you decide on the style and look you wanted for the big day?

I had many hair trials with Kerrie she must have tried every style on me, but once I had picked my dress I knew I wanted all of my hair up as I felt it might annoy me being down. With my makeup I didn’t want anything too dark I wanted to keep it light and natural looking

The ceremony

What was your favourite moment of the ceremony?

Walking out of the ceremony room as husband and wife

Did you pick any special music to walk down the aisle to, or have any readings?

We had a singer called Grace Grundy sing a selection of our favorite songs with sounded amazing

The reception

Tell us about your wedding cake. Who made and designed it for you?

Our cake was beautiful, it was made by Chelsea Buns and tasted amazing. It was 4 tiers and had different flavors.

What were your speeches like? Any standout moments?

The speeches were lovely but also funny there was a few stand out moments from the Best Man which had a lot of people laughing

The décor

What was your decor/colour scheme, and how did you decide on it?

Our color scheme was lemon and grey/silver I had seen some pictures on Pinterest and felt it looked nice together.

Who did your wedding flowers?

Our florist was the lovely Michelle – flower art she is one of winters barns recommended suppliers and she didn’t disappoint.

What did you have in your flower arrangements/bouquets?

I left Michelle to work her magic as I have no idea about flowers and what would work together but we had a mixture of beautiful roses, peonies and many more to pull the bouquet together.

How did you add personal touches to the look and feel of your day?

We had some photos printed from memories of our time together which we had hanging up on a dresser, and a few bits were hand made.

Did you use any local suppliers for things like lighting, accessories and props?

Sarah from light of my life did our Mr & Mrs Solly lights and they looked amazing she also supplied all the venue décor we had some beautiful crystal trees as our center pieces which looked beautiful, along with one of my friends Sarah from All you need wedding styling who was just amazing and helped me with some different ideas on décor things I hadn’t thought of and provided us with some extra pieces which completed the look.

The entertainment

Did you have a DJ or a band? How did you choose them?

Yes, we had Ben from The Wedding Chaps he was so good and provided us with a Mr & Mrs game which was fun and a tom foolery prop box. The Wedding Chaps are recommended by Winters Barns which made it a lot easier for us.

What was your first dance, and why was it special to you?

Our first dance was to Falling like the stars by amber leigh irish it was an acoustic version of James Arthur. We both really loved the song from the second we heard it and we both agreed it would be an amazing wedding song

The photography

Who was your wedding photographer, and how did you choose them?

Louisa & Duncan Dettmer was our photographers. I met Louisa at a wedding fare, we had only been engaged a few weeks and haven’t even got a venue but I just liked Louisa at our first meeting luckily they was available once we had booked the venue.

What style/look did you want for your photos? We just wanted nice natural photos and Louisa and Duncan didn’t disappoint

Do you have a favorite photo from the day?

I think my favorite photo of the day is the one of us two in front of the famous Winters Barns doors

Did you have a videographer?

Yes, Louisa actually recommended us Luke from Look Back & Remember.

And finally

What was your absolute highlight of the day?

Just having all our nearest and dearest there to celebrate our wedding

Do you have any tips or advice for other couples having a Kentish Ceremony?

To just try and enjoy every single second of the day it goes so fast, try not to stress over stuff that people probably wouldn’t even notice
